Good Kitchen Design Simplified

Uncategorized Feb 07, 2025

A well-designed kitchen isn’t just about looks—it’s about how it works for you.

In our latest episode of our podcast 'Two Gins In, A Designer’s Perspective', we unpacked the essentials of kitchen design, from selecting the perfect materials to maximizing storage and avoiding common mistakes.

Whether you're planning a renovation or just dreaming of your perfect space, here’s a deep dive into the key elements of a well-thought-out kitchen.

  1.  Understand Your Kitchen Needs

Every household is different, and your kitchen should reflect your lifestyle. Do you love entertaining? What type of cooking do you mainly do? Need extra storage for bulk groceries? Identifying your needs helps lay the foundation for a practical, functional space.

📝 Pro tip: Map out your daily kitchen routine before finalizing the layout.

  1.  Layout & Workflow: The Golden Triangle

The classic work triangle—connecting the sink, stove, and fridge—is a timeless rule for optimising movement. However, modern kitchens also consider zones (prep, cooking, cleaning, storage) to ensure seamless functionality.

💡 Think about your kitchen’s flow—do you constantly cross paths with family members when cooking? If so, an island might be better placed elsewhere!

  1.  Choosing a Hero Element

A hero element, like a striking splashback, a bold island bench, or custom cabinetry, adds character and ties the whole design together. This is where you can inject personality and style into your space.

🎨 Our favorite? A statement stone benchtop that wows every time!

  1.  Materials Matter

From durable benchtops to easy-to-clean cabinetry, selecting the right materials makes a big impact.

✅ Porcelain = low maintenance and high durability
✅ Timber accents = warmth and texture
✅ Matte finishes = hides fingerprints better than glossy surfaces

  1.  Storage Solutions for a Clutter-Free Kitchen

A dream kitchen isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about smart storage. Deep drawers, pull-out pantries, and corner solutions can make a world of difference.

📌 Tip: Incorporate vertical storage or hidden compartments to maximise space.

  1.  Lighting: More Than Just Downlights

Lighting sets the mood and enhances functionality. Layering task lighting (under-cabinet), ambient lighting (pendants), and accent lighting creates a well-balanced space.

Avoid harsh lighting—soft, warm LEDs make kitchens feel cozy and inviting.

  1.  Appliances: Function First, Style Second

Your choice of appliances should compliment your cooking habits. Think carefully about what functions you need from your major appliances (some of these may even eliminate the need for several of your small appliances that take up valuable storage space). Induction/ gas cooktops, integrated fridges/dishwashers or fridges that require plumbing for ice and water and exhaust fans. Also consider the position of and the noise output of your appliances. We are spoilt with many designs and functional options these days which can truly elevate both the functionality and aesthetics of your kitchen.

🔧 Tip: Test appliances in-store before buying. Ask for a cooking demonstration and don’t forget, ergonomics matter!

  1.  Personalising Your Kitchen

The best kitchens reflect you. Whether it’s unique hardware, open shelving, or a pop of colour, small personal touches make a space feel inviting.

🌿 Try adding some greenery or display your favourite cookbooks and crockery on the benchtop or open shelves for both a stylish and practical touch!

  1.  Avoiding Common Kitchen Design Mistakes

🚫 Oversized, and unproportioned islands that disrupt flow
🚫 Insufficient badly placed task lighting
🚫 Too many open shelves (prone to clutter as well as being dust collectors!)
🚫 Skimping on storage planning

Final Thoughts

Designing a kitchen can feel overwhelming, but with the right approach, it becomes an exciting journey. Remember, good design is a blend of function, aesthetics, and personal style.
