"As the previous Hotel Manager for Carnival Australia's P & O fleet my role was to manage the design team at M + L Design. M+ L were employed to architecturally design and draft and document various areas on the ships for several dry dock fit outs which were completed in Brisbane Australia. The Design team were initially asked to re-fit the gymnasium and day spa on a ship, the first brief then expanded to lobby areas, dining and several bars and lounges, These last minute additions to the design scope were added pressure to the M + L team, however they took all new projects on board and managed to complete the additional works all within the tight deadlines we set. The designs M + L presented were unlike previous 'like for like' fit outs which gave the ships an up-to-date contemporary look which suited the Australian cruise ship market. The principal Designers were asked by the VP of Carnival upon completion of their designs to then project manage the fit outs whilst the ships were in dry dock. Both Helen and Karyn stepped up to the challenge moving on the docked ship for the duration of each dry dock, liasing with trades from all around the globe ensuring the fit out was carried out exactly to their specification. Their communication skills and the manner in which they conducted themselves and their ability to problem solve on the spot earns them respect from all levels within Carnival, from the VP to Super intendants to the crew. On a side note the girls weren't afraid of getting their 'hands dirty' whilst in dry dock was under way, moving furniture and equipment when needed, attending daily project meetings, liasing with the crane crew for lifts of specified equipment and they would happily visit hardware stores purchasing necessary goods to keep the project moving along, proving themselves to be a real asset to the dry docks success. Hence we offered the team additional projects on other dry docks for the fit out of retail spaces, promenade and bar areas which again required on site project management. I can HIGHLY recommend the team at M + L Design, their positive attitude when thrown a design challenge and their ability to solve such challenges is an asset for any prospective client. Their creativity and skills in the design field when it comes to hotel fit out is second to none and their dedication and commitment to us as a client exceeded our expectations. "
