A day in the life of a Building + Interior Designer

If you've ever wondered what a day in the life of a building and interior designer looks like, you're in the right place. We're Karyn and Helen, the owners of McRae + Lynch Designs, we take our craft seriously but most importantly not ourselves and we're excited to share with you what our day-to-day work looks like.
First off, it's important to understand that no two days are the same for us. Our work is constantly changing and evolving as we work on different projects and collaborate with various clients and trades, However, there are certain aspects of our work that are consistent.
Our day usually starts with a cup of coffee for Helen and I Chai for me and a quick review of our project schedules. We then meet with our admin / client liaison assistant Clare to discuss the priorities for the week in terms of the admin side of the business. To manage the admin we use a project management tool called Monday.com to keep track of our tasks and deadlines, so we always know what needs to be done for each project. This is crucial to ensure we meet the needs of our clients and stay on top of our workload.
After our coffee, we often head to a job site. This is where we get to see our designs come to life. We work closely with the Builder and tradespeople to ensure that the construction and installation process is going smoothly and according to plan. We make sure to check in on the progress of the project, and address any issues or concerns that arise.
Once we're done on the job site, we head back to our office. This is where we spend a lot of our time researching and designing and drafting . We gather inspiration, look for new materials and finishes, and create detailed design plans for our clients. This is where the magic happens, and we get to see our ideas take shape using our 3D design and drafting software platform called Archi-cad.
We also spend a lot of time communicating with our clients. We have regular meetings to review design plans, discuss budgets and timelines, and make sure that everyone is on the same page. We value communication and collaboration with our clients, and we make sure to keep them informed and involved throughout the entire process.
One of the most important aspects of our work is pre-planning. We emphasize the importance of careful planning and informed decision-making to our clients. We make sure to consider every detail and aspect of the project, from the layout and functionality of the space to the style and finishes. This ensures that our clients are happy with the end result and that the project is a success.
Throughout our work, we rely on industry insights and share valuable tools and tips with our clients. We make sure to stay up-to-date on the latest design trends, materials, and building regulations. We also use our knowledge and experience to guide our clients through the renovation or new build journey, providing them with support and guidance every step of the way.
At the end of the day, our work is incredibly fulfilling. We get to use our creativity and expertise to transform spaces and make our clients' visions a reality. We love working with our clients, and we enjoy the challenge of creating unique and functional designs that meet their specific needs.
